Ciemny czas cyklu // The dark time of the cycle

(English version below)

Czas przesilenia zimowego to czas najciemniejszy, czas maksymalnego zatrzymania, czas śnienia i spotkania z cieniem.

I tutaj wielkie zmiany serwują zmiany klimatyczne. Podziemie i korzenie drzewa to miejsce gdzie panują gady, a według wierzeń słowiańskich bram do zaświatów w podziemiach strzegł Żmij, zwany też czasem potworem chaosu. Gdy te znowu będą sprzyjające wreszcie można znowu kierować swoją energię do coraz jaśniejszego i bardziej przyjaznego świata zewnętrznego..

It is now late fall in the northern hemisphere. A time of darkness, not only in the annual cycle but also in the socio-political situation. However, I will not tell you about it here at this time. ... I will tell you about the calendar I drew some time ago. Let it remind us of cycles. That there is a time to be active and there is a time to rest. That there is the time to grow and act, and there is the time when the shadows and the subconscious come to the fore. That there is a time of death that brings transformation, and after it always comes a new life.

"Dance of the life-giving forces with the stopping forces"

It can also be treated as a calendar, because it tells the story of transformation during the year on the Northern Hemisphere, in Poland.

It took me a long time to create this illustration. Firstly, I wanted to create it based on old Slavic beliefs and calendars. However, they are so indistinct, and there are so many versions of them that it was difficult for me to put it together into a comprehensive picture or even fully understand. them. So I decided to leave the skeleton that made sense to me and complete the details based on my own intuition and observation.

What we have here is a tree, you can treat it as a cosmic tree of life, axis mundi if you like. Like any tree, it connects the worlds - the underworld with the cosmos and our mundane, human world. There will be no scientific accuracy this time, because it is a tree illustrating the processes. On the beginninig - on the left side in March - time of equinox - we can see the apperance od leaves, later buds, and flowers. Birds that flew away for winter return, they reside in this part of the year and in the treetops - they are the connection between the earth and the cosmos. According to old beliefs, on the top of the cosmic tree sat Kur, who guarded the connection with the cosmos, or gods. The time of maximum flowering of the energy of life is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, here at the very top. After the flowers are pollinated, the fruits are appearing, which in turn, like the leaves, eventually fall to provide the soil with nutrients.

After the September equinox the days are getting shorter each day, we go underground, into what is dark, which requires a different perception than in the spring and summer period. In Slavic mythology, this time was called by some the Time of Ancestors (as opposed to the Time of Gods, or sometimes time of Marzanna, as opposed to the time of Dziewanna). This is where the inward movement begins - the animals are hiding, getting ready to hibernate, many plants shed their leaves or curl inward - it is not the time to give, but to concentrate the energy inward and hibernate.

If I had done this illustration 10 years ago, probably the bottom of the illustration - the period from mid-November to February would be completely white, covered with snow.. today, however, it is not true. Climate change affects everything, including symbolism and beliefs. So I decided to focus on the darkness that is present at this time, and it also creates a kind of cosmos in which we have to navigate through not so much with our eyes, but perhaps more with intuition. The time of the winter solstice is the darkest time, the time of maximum halt, the time of dreaming and meeting the shadow. There is also a lot of space for strange things emerging from the darkness that cannot be easily explained.

Water also participates in the process of transformation - it is life-giving, but can be also dark or dangerous - it is also undergoing its transformation during the year. This is where climate change brings about great changes too. In the old beliefs, the time of winter was also called "the time of stopped water”. I decided to draw this, even though this happens very rarely now, yet it symbolizes the process of the arrest of the life forces. The skull is the head of this water serpent that is undergoing transformation. It appears at the culmination of this time, the darkest day of the year, the winter solstice day. The underground and the roots of the tree is a place where reptiles reign, and according to Slavic beliefs, the gates to the underworld were guarded by Żmij (a snake like creature), sometimes also called the monster of chaos. Time of dreaming. After this darkest period there is a slow awakening, the movement of ascending carefully outside to explore the conditions. Once these conditions are favorable again, the energy can be directed again to an ever brighter and more friendly than previously outside world .. And all this is happening so that the whole process can repeat itself again..

I drew this story with the intention of remembering those places and processes that take place in the outside but also inner worlds. I also believe that there is a place, somewhere in the middle, where one can be part of these processes with peace and act with wisdom. Finding this place is something I wish for myself, and for you as well, if it is what you are looking for.
